When I was a student in chiropractic school, I asked a teacher of mine, a neurologist, "if you could take only one supplement, what would it be?" He answered, "Omega-3s, fish oil. Without a doubt." The benefits of Omega-3s (fish oil) are well researched and numerous. Mostly, they reduce inflammation, which is the number one cause of disease in our bodies. Inflammation is known to lead to dementia, heart disease, obesity, ADHD, depression, and cancer, just to name a few. If we can reduce inflammation in the body, we can reduce and prevent many chronic diseases.

Omega-3s are a fatty acid that is considered essential to the human body. However, we can't produce it on our own so we must get it from our food. The best sources in food are the smaller, cold-water fish like anchovies, sardines and mackerel because they have the least amount of mercury. Farmed fish have almost no Omega-3s and larger, wild fish have plenty of it but are full of toxins like mercury. If you are a vegetarian you can find Omega-3s in some plants and nuts such as flax and chia seeds however the amount in these sources is minimal. Because of the challenges of getting Omega-3s from our foods, many people are deficient. That's why most health-care professionals recommend an Omega-3 supplement.

It has been shown to both treat and prevent hardening of the arteries by slowing down plaque buildup and blood clots in the blood vessels.

DHA (an Omega-3 fatty acid) is an incredibly important tool in the formation of our brain's communication network, called synapses. Observational studies of DHA users showed decreased risk for developing Alzheimer's symptoms by slowing memory decline. Please note that this study looked specifically at patients who carried the gene correlated with Alzheimers, called APOE4. Those patients saw the greatest benefit from the trial.

Unfortunately because vitamins on the market are not regulated at all by the FDA, a lot of the Omega-3 supplements are not pure and likely contain traces of mercury. Most "paleo" or "healthy" recipes for cookies taste like you're leaving something out. But these cookies are so good! They're rich, chocolatey and you'd never know they rate low on the glycemic index and have NO FLOUR!

{FLOURLESS & HEALTHY} DOUBLE CHOCOLATE COOKIES

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2/3 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Pinch of salt omit if your peanut butter is salted
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips plus extra for topping

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • In a medium sized bowl, beat together the peanut butter, coconut sugar, and vanilla extract.
  • (Do not heat up the peanut butter at all)
  • In a separate bowl, combine the cocoa powder, salt, and baking soda.
  • Stir together and then beat in with the other ingredients.
  • Beat in the egg until just combined and then stir in the chocolate chips.
  • Form balls of dough and press 3 to 4 chocolate chips into the top if desired. Press the cookies down so they aren't puffed up.
  • Bake for 6-8 minutes (Mine took exactly 6 minutes, but my oven runs a bit hotter). Watch them carefully because they go from perfectly baked to burned quickly especially with the coconut sugar.
  • These cookies are crumbly while they are hot. Let them cool completely (or enjoy some deliciously hot, but crumbly cookies right out of the oven)
