Low Back Pain Relief Starts Here in Oakland CA

When I was 24, for the first time in my life, I started to experience chronic low back pain. At first I would start to feel some tightness in my low back, then, out of nowhere, my back would seize up and I would be almost completely unable to move. I would have to get up in the middle of the night and walk around, due to pain. Eventually, the episode would go away then when I did something seemingly innocuous, like pick up a piece of paper, my back would seize up again just a few weeks later. This pattern continued for years and I tried everything. I went to my MD and she gave me not one, not two but three different medications. A day later, in a complete fog, I threw them away realizing they would lead to a whole host of other problems. I went to the physical therapist who taught me exercises that I couldn’t do without ending up in spasm. I went to an acupuncturist. While that was relaxing, it did nothing for the pattern of pain and spasm that was regularly occurring. Finally I found a chiropractor who not only helped me get relief from pain and experience more range of motion, she also set me on a path that would forever change my life and my career.

I had such a positive experience that I decided to become a chiropractor myself so that I could help others. It’s been 18 years now and my back feels better than it has since I was in my teens. Below I’ll share with you what to do when you’re in an acute pain cycle.

Low back pain can happen to any of us. For most of us, the pain lasts only a couple of days and goes away on it’s own. For some, the pain is chronic and sticks around for months, even years. The causes of low back pain are numerous and complex, but thankfully, there are a few things you can do to help alleviate the pain: Ice your low back immediately, do some gentle stretching with the video I provided below, and schedule a Chiropractic visit with me so that we can get to the root of your problem. I recommend a combination of the three for the greatest improvement.

1. Ice Immediately

Icing helps to reduce the swelling and inflammation caused by an acute or chronic injury. Apply ice with only one layer of fabric in between your skin and the ice pack, for about 10-15 minutes at a time within 48 hours of the injury for maximum benefit. You can ice every two hours if necessary.

2. Stretch and Walk

You might think that staying still and not moving will be the best for your back when you are in a state where it’s locked up. In fact, our spines are meant to move, even if it’s just a little bit. This will help to increase blood flow, stretch the muscles, and help get the muscles out of spasm. There are some very gentle exercises you can do which will help to release some of the tension. Take a look at the video I made here for some safe, effective stretches you can do for some low back pain relief. And get outside and walk, even if it’s only for 5-10 minutes. Walking, like the stretches, will improve blood flow to the area and help to activate the stabilization muscles in the legs so that they can support the back.

Spinal manipulation (aka Chiropractic treatment) is a great way to treat low back pain. It’s a safe and effective treatment when performed by a trained professional like myself (12 years experience).

There is strong evidence that chiropractic care is effective as other interventions, and sometimes more effective. Especially with regards to chronic low back pain, spinal manipulative therapy provides more relief than pharmacological options. In one randomized clinical control trial, the success rate of chiropractic treatment was twice as high, compared to physical therapy or general practitioner treatment (drugs). Additionally, chiropractic care may be less expensive than other therapies in the long run because it aims to fix the root of the problem.
