How to Repair Text Neck: Look and Feel Better by Improving Your Posture
A couple of weeks ago a teenager presented in my office with severe headaches and neck pain. Her parents were baffled, she'd had no injuries. I explained to them that while she had not had a one-time trauma like a fall or a car accident, her phone and computer were causing a repetitive trauma everyday. She was spending hours a day bent over her phone and was starting to look and feel like an old woman. For the first time in my career, kids have been coming in with posture and pain that I used to only see in the elderly population. Text neck, or Forward Head Posture (FHP) can create a whole host of issues including headaches, neck pain, dizziness, TMJ and pain, numbness, and tingling in the arms, hands, and fingers. I will briefly outline the basis for treatment of these problems.
What is Text Neck?
Forward head posture is a forward misalignment (subluxation) of the cervical vertebrae. When the neck is forward, the center of gravity is shifted forward, putting extra stress on the neck, shoulders, and mid back, leading to early wear and tear on the cervical vertebrae and spinal discs. This problem is mainly due to poor computer and mobile ergonomics as sadly, Americans devote, on average, 10 hours of day to screentime.
Correcting Text Neck
(CBP) is a technique that I employ because it has documented and published benefits in making structural changes to the spine by restoring it to a stronger, more stable, and ultimately healthier position. The ideal postural alignment is one that provides the most stability with respect to gravity. When looking from the side, a curve of the neck (cervical lordosis) should be present. Just like normal blood pressure and normal cholesterol, there are established normals for the curves of the spine.
The treatment process for restoring the curve of the neck requires regular office visits and diligence on the patient’s part in order to make lasting structural changes. I often prescribe the Denneroll (a home traction device), as part of a patient’s treatment along with specific exercises and ergonomic changes. In just minutes a day, the neck curve can be significantly improved and oftentimes totally corrected. We measure the outcomes with a post x-ray. Denneroll’s are only available through licensed professionals and should never be used without an x-ray to determine that it is in fact the appropriate treatment.
So many people suffer from text neck nowadays that we could all stand to benefit from treatment. Degeneration (arthritis), especially at a young age, will set you up for a lifetime of pain if left untreated. Thankfully, treatment is straightforward because CBP relies on tried and true research methods to determine a proper course of action. I prescribe patients tractions that they can do from the comfort of their home so they seek the lasting structural changes that will alleviate their pain.
