Four Meditation Apps to Decrease Stress

It may seem like a bit of an oxymoron to plug-in in order to unplug, but if you're new to meditating, a meditation app is an easy way to learn how to relax, decrease stress, and even improve your brain function.

According to a study published in Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging and run by Harvard researchers, “Participating in an eight-week mindfulness meditation program appears to make measurable changes in brain regions associated with memory, sense of self, empathy, and stress.” Below is a list of my four favorite mediation apps that will help you to establish a regular mediation practice.

1. Andrew Johnson Relax

Andrew Johnson has an almost hypnotic tone and an ability to relax the listener faster than any other app I have encountered. Apps range from FREE for the basics to $19.99 for the whole suite of apps. I recommend starting with Relax for $2.99 to see if it works for you.


2. Calm

Calm, described as a "sanctuary in your pocket," offers several free guided meditations and a Pro version for $9.99.


3. Buddhify

Buddhify offers over 80 guided meditations for a variety of activities and environments, be it at the office, driving or in bed. Cost is $2.99.


4. Smiling Mind

An Australian nonprofit initiative that offers six free mindfulness meditation programs for a variety of age groups, including children and adolescents. Free.
