Flu Season Got You Down? in oakland ca
Unfortunately, flu and cold season are well under way. I got a nasty cold over Thanksgiving and was reminded of all the things I should be doing to ward off illness. Below are a few ways you can boost your immune system and increase your chances of maintaining health this holiday season.
The immune system is the primary defense against infection. Our bodies have ways of warding off viral invaders, like mucous membranes which work as physical barriers to prevent viruses from entering our bodies, and fever to clear our system of intruders by cranking up the heat. However, there are other things we can do to prevent getting sick in the first place, because fighting off infection is no fun. Here are just a few ways to reduce your chances of getting cold or flu viruses this season.
Regular Hand Washing
Regular hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of illness. Viruses can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours, so thoroughly washing your hands regularly is a great way to cut down on the risk of getting a cold or flu virus. Just don’t use antibacterial soap, as there are no proven benefits for its’ use.
Regular chiropractic care can increase a person’s natural resistance to cold viruses. This natural resistance also helps one to overcome a cold virus faster in the event that one does get sick. Your spine houses and protects your nervous system, which in turn controls your immune response. Regular chiropractic adjustments can reduce the physiological disturbances in your nervous system. According to the World Chiropractic Alliance, spinal adjustments can help your immune system function better by addressing these disturbances, called subluxations.

Humacel is a supplement that you take at the first sign of a cold or flu. A virus must first attach itself to a cell’s membrane to initiate an infection, and Humacel prevents this action by blocking glycoproteins (the “sticky” binding sites) on the virus’ surface, preventing viral attachment, replication and infection. Humacel accomplishes this through a proprietary blend of humic and fulvic acid, blueberry extract, and other herbs. Humic acid can stop viral cell attachment and blueberry extract has numerous antioxidant properties.
Pre-clinical studies at the National Institute of Health support the efficacy of Humacel and its ability to help you fight colds. Simply take two at the first sign of a cold, and then continue to take one every few hours until the symptoms go away. We sell Humacel in office.
- Exercise: Research has shown that, as long as you’re not feeling dizzy or nauseas, a light walk or mild bout of exercise can help to break up mucus and release endorphins, putting you in a better mood.
- Sleep: Definitely get your Z’s when you are sick. Sleeping is known to have a positive effect on the immune response, increasing your chances of fighting off the infection sooner than later.
- Vitamin D: Adequate levels of Vitamin D are essential for a thriving immune system. Flu season is typically associated with colder weather and lack of sun, so if you’re unable to get your Vitamin D from sunlight, take a quality supplement instead.
