Fatigue: Why Am I So Tired And
What Can I Do About It?
Have you been suffering from chronic fatigue or low energy? Have you tried everything with no success?
Eating a healthful diet and getting regular physical activity can help reduce fatigue for many people. Making sure to get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep can help as well.
Traditional medicine focuses on symptoms like decreased energy with medications that often make the problem worse. Functional medicine doctors differ in that we try to find the underlying issues in your body systems. There are often multiple factors coming together to cause fatigue. These could be leaky gut, adrenal fatigue, history of antibiotics, poor diet, illness, obesity, infections, toxins, or even genetic predisposition. Our first step will be to acquire a detailed patient history in order to find clues as to why you have fatigue. This gives us better tools for addressing your problem on the deepest possible level.
Next, we order focused labs to try to find the root cause of your fatigue. The main labs we order are based on three main body systems. They are:
- The neuro-endocrine system, which includes the health of the adrenals - how your body handles stress, thyroid function, sex hormone regulation, cellular energy production, and neurotransmitter activity.
- The gastrointestinal (GI) system, which includes checking for the presence of pathogens and infections, what nutrient deficiencies you have, as well as a look at the overall health of your microbiome.
- The detox pathways, including liver detox, searching for environmental toxins (like lead and mercury), chemical sensitivities, and the overall ability for the body to remove
- Finally, based on your history and labs, we will work together to create a targeted and individualized health plan that works for you. We will combine changes in diet and lifestyle with medical-grade supplementation to restore your health.

See below for some dietary suggestions that will help you fight fatigue.
What can you do to fight fatigue?
Cut out caffeine. Caffeine may help you wake up momentarily but caffeine actually aggravates adrenal exhaustion and low blood sugar, amplifying anxiety and stress symptoms and fatigue.
Cut out sugar and refined foods like white rice and pasta. Sugar and refined foods, like caffeine, will give you a temporary boost, but can cause you to crash afterwards.
Stabilize your blood sugar levels by eating high-fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, and farro are all good options). Because the body digests them at a slower rate than the refined foods, you'll have more energy for a longer period of time.
Avoid inflammatory foods in general as inflammation can worsen your chronic fatigue symptoms. Get more information on inflammatory foods by reading my blog, Inflammatory Foods to Avoid.
