Disc Decompression in Oakland

For Relief of Sciatica, Neck Pain, and Numbness and Tingling in the Arms and Hands

Disc decompression therapy at our Oakland functional medicine clinic uses a controlled, mechanical traction to gently pull and then slowly release the spine by alleviating pressure on the discs, allowing them to heal. Decompression therapy is available for the relief of low back or neck pain and dysfunction.

Spinal disc decompression is a form of disc rehabilitation. Not only does disc decompression minimize herniations and bulges, it also improves oxygen, nutrient, and water flow to the disc. This allows the disc to regain its proper motion, increase its ability to withstand shear stressors, and act as an improved "shock-absorber." If decompression is successful, the disc will remain rehabilitated after treatment is finished.

A Typical Treatment

For low back decompression, a patient lies comfortably on her back with a set of padded straps pulled snug around her hips and another set pulled around her lower chest. For the neck, the patient lies comfortably on her back, with a pair of soft rubber pads holding the neck in place. In both cases, patients at Core Wellness Functional Medicine in Oakland will feel a gentle and gradual pulling sensation as the spine is distracted. Many patients enjoy the treatment because oftentimes it provides immediate relief from pain.

Most treatments last about 15 minutes. Twelve sessions is the minimum number of treatments required for a disc injury, especially with radiating pain into the leg and arm.
